Really juicing your conversations

Reflecting upon conversations on a Friday afternoon

How were the conversations you had this week? Did they deliver everything you hoped?

If not, how did you prepare? Did you set a clear intention ahead of time, or do you have a clear framework you bring to your conversations to help steer the flow?

Try this in your conversations and 1-to-1 meetings next week:

  • Before you meet, have a clear intention as to why you're having the conversation. Are you there to share or gain information, to explore options, to facilitate the other person's thinking, or simply to listen?

  • During the interaction, bring your full attention to the conversation, clear any distractions.

  • After the event, and before you dash off to your next meeting, take a few moments to reflect. Ask yourself a few questions. How did that go? Did I remain present and listen well? Did I allow my intention to get derailed unnecessarily? Having reflected in this way, what would you do differently next time for greater impact?

Remaining connected with our teams, peers and leaders demands time, energy, and commitment, and doing this effectively while working remotely brings its own challenges. Its crucial we get a good return on the time we invest in our conversations, whether it's one with the simple aim of maintaining good relationships with our co-workers, or one with a wellbeing, motivation, development or outcome focus.
